YEREVAN (ARMENPRESS)—Cultural groups in Turkey are decrying the inaction of Turkish police following the robbery and arson of the St. Peter Monastery and neighboring Armenian cemetery in Sason, Batman province.
The Cultural Union of Armenians for Social Assistance and Solidarity of Sason, Batman, Bitlis, Mush, Van and Istanbul reported the attack on the historic Armenian site to the Sason Prosecutor’s Office after unidentified assailants removed the remains of individuals buried in the monastery and set fire to the church.
Speaking to “Demokrathaber,” president of the Cultural Union, Aziz Dagci, said that police did not visit the crime scene to start an investigation after the incident was reported.
“On the same day, we informed the Gendarmerie General Command of Batman. They said they would send firefighters. But a fire truck cannot go up to Mesheli village as the road leading to the monastery is not open yet. We must thank the residents of Mesheli for putting out the fire,” Dagci said.
