BURBANK — More than one hundred people gathered at a Saturday morning breakfast raising $1500 to benefit the Syrian-Armenian Relief Fund.

Hosted by the Armenian Youth Federation Juniors Burbank “Gaidzag” chapter, the idea for the event came about when members of the chapter received an educational presentation about the dire situation of the Syrian-Armenian community at a recent Friday gathering.

“The youth became motivated to lend a helping hand to those impacted by the war, and SARF provided a vehicle for them to do so,” said Armen Tchaghlassian, a member of the chapter executive. “Raising money and organizing a breakfast is the least each of us can do to help our brothers and sisters who have lost so much; and we are very thankful for everyone who supported this important effort.”

In her opening remarks from Alique Boyajian, chairperson of the Burbank AYF Juniors thanked the attendees and supporters, and encouraged everyone to continue to keep the plight of Syrians and Syrian Armenians in their thoughts.  SARF representative Vazken Madenlian offered remarks about the current areas of need, and the importance of monetary assistance to Syrian Armenians because the war shows no signs of slowing.  He emphasized our collective national responsibility to assist Armenians in need, regardless of where we live. Madenlian further encouraged attendees to participate in the upcoming “Save a Life” Telethon.

“The AYF Juniors worked very hard to make sure the event was successful.  They solicited donations, took charge of setting up, and helped prepare the food.  “I’m proud of them for learning about Syrian Armenians, and taking the initiative to support them,” said Lisa Boyadjian, parent of Burbank AYF Juniors member Savannah Boyadjian.

The Syrian Armenian Relief Fund “Save a Life” Telethon will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 2-8 p.m.

The AYF Juniors is a grassroots community organization for Armenian-American youth specifically from the ages of 8 to 16 years old.  As an extension of the AYF and its core values, the AYF Juniors connect youth with their Armenian heritage, and politically and socially engages them with critical issues facing Armenians.
