YEREVAN (ArmeniaNow)–Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored another stunner for Borussia Dortmund on Thursday night. But this goal stood out from many others that the 26-year-old Armenia international has provided for his German club.
It did not take Dortmund playing in their native Signal Iduna Park a lot of effort to beat Azerbaijan’s Qabala in their latest UEFA Europa League fixture. But for one player in the field it must have been a time to “make a statement.”
Two weeks before Mkhitaryan chose not to travel to Baku for the first-leg match as threats had been made against him in Azerbaijan, which is Armenia’s arch military foe in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. But the international star got the chance to show his quality against Qabala in Germany and did not fail to deliver.
In the game that ended 4-0 to the home side Mkhitaryan made two assists and scored a spectacular goal in the 70th minute, putting his team on an aggregate 7-1 win in the group stage over the Azeri side.
The victory also provided qualification for Borussia to the next round in Europe’s second most prestigious tournament.
