YEREVAN (ArmeniaNow)—Popular Armenian actress Varduhi Varderesyan, known for her roles in theater and cinema, died on Tuesday, November 24 at the age of 87.
News of Varderesyan’s death was confirmed by the Union of Theater Workers of Armenia.
Varderesyan was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1928 and repatriated to Armenia in 1946. In Gyumri, then Leninakan, she completed the establishment the Leninakan Dramatical Theater and continued working in a local theater. From 1958 on, she was one of the leading actresses of the Sundukyan Drama Theater of Yerevan.
Varderesyan’s filmography includes roles in over a dozen films that made her popular both in Armenia and abroad.
In 1988, Varderesyan was awarded the title of the People’s Artist of the USSR, the highest title given to an artist in the Soviet Union. Varderesyan later received the Movses Khorenatsi medal in 1995 and the Mesrop Mashtots order in 2013 by the government of the Republic of Armenia. In 2002, she was declared an honorary citizen of Yerevan.
