GLENDALE—The ARF-Dashnaktsutiune Western US Central Committee on Thursday issued an announcement through which it welcomed the German Bundestag’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide and urged Turkey to follow suit.
Below is the translated text of the announcement.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western US Central Committee welcomes the decision on Thursday by the German Bundestag to recognize the Genocide of Armenians and Christians.
By rejecting the shortsighted and criminal posturing by the great world powers, which have legitimized the sacrificing of truth and historical justice for paltry political and diplomatic interests, Germany’s legislature did not yield to Turkey’s threats and pressures and overwhelmingly approved the measure recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
By accepting responsibility for its role in the Genocide, Germany has given more weight to this issue and will provide greater impetus to the effort for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, while at the same time will strengthen the basis for our demands.
The time has come for the Turkish authorities to realize that they cannot escape their responsibilities. Every year their policy of denial suffers a blow. Thus their only recourse is the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and paving the way for Armenian demands.
