YEREVAN—Armenia border units on Sunday thwarted an apparent move by Azerbaijani forces to fortify their positions at the Nakhichevan border, according to a Facebook post by Armenia’s Defense Ministry spokesperson, Artsrun Hovhannisyan.
According to Hovhannisyan, Armenian Armed Forces opened fire Sunday when their Azerbaijani counterparts attempted to fortify their positions along the Nakhichevan border. The Armenian response was aimed to thwart efforts of the Azerbaijani forces, which have been staging advances closer to the Armenian border in recent weeks.

In his Facebook post, Hovhannisyan said that during the operation, Armenian forces were able to completely destroy one of the Azerbaijani military posts as it burned to the ground from the retaliation.
He announced that Vahagn Baghdasaryan, born 1974, a soldier of the Armenian Army, was slightly injured during the operation.
On Monday, Hovhannisyan told Armenpress that the situation on the border was relatively calm, with sporadic fire reported.
“There have been shots after the recent incident, but at the moment the situation is relatively calm,” said Hovhannisyan.
