GLENDALE—The Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America (AESA) will be celebrating its 32nd anniversary in a luncheon event on November 1, 2015 at the Brandview Ballroom.
“In this year’s anniversary celebration we will be honoring Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian, the President of American University of Armenia, with AESA’s Victor Hambartsumyan award for his achievements and services to the Armenian and scientific communities. We will also recognize Mr. Sarkis Barkhoudarian with AESA’s Service Award for his services and dedication to AESA for the past 22 years,” stated Marina Guevrekian, Ph.D. AESA 2015 President. She added that “one of my goals during my presidency is to attract young engineers and scientist to AESA.” As part of this effort, AESA will honor young scientists and engineers for their achievements during the anniversary event.
Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian is currently the President of American University of Armenia and is on leave from UC Berkley, where he is Taisei Professor of Civil Engineering. “Dr. Kiureghian’s scientific and civic contributions and achievements are hard to match. He has published over 300 articles in refereed and other journals and publications. With Dr. Agbabian, Professor Emeritus of University of Southern California, they founded American University of Armenia (AUA) in 1991,” added Dr. Guevrekian.
Mr. Barkhoudarian, a retired engineer from Pratt and Whitney, is an expert in diagnostic methods and had worked on rocket engines including Space Shuttle’s main engines. He has been supporting AESA for over 22 years and continues to support its activities in different capacities. He was AESA President in 1994 and has participated in the Science Olympiad Committee activities since its inception. He has started a few committees and assisted in fund raising for various activities, to name a few.
This year, AESA, for the first time is recognizing scientists and engineers younger than 35 years old for their achievements in science, engineering, innovation and community service.
The event will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at the Brandview Ballroom, in Glendale, California. The reception starts at 11:00am followed by lunch at 12:00pm. There will be the awards ceremony, as well as musical performances during the luncheon.

The AESA was founded in 1983 in Glendale, California as a non-partisan and non-sectarian philanthropic organization focused primarily on addressing the professional, technical, and scientific needs of fellow Armenian engineers, scientists, industrialists, and architects throughout the world. The AESA has several chapters in the United States, including New York/New Jersey and Michigan. Since its inception 32 years ago, the AESA has organized two World Armenian Scientific Congresses. The 1st World Congress was held in the United States and the Second World Congress was jointly organized with Ararat Academy of Sciences of France, which was held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in 1993.
The AESA has also organized several symposia including one on “Economic Restructuring of Armenia” which was held in Los Angeles in 1991. This specific symposium attracted more than 200 professionals from the U.S., Armenia, Canada, UK, France and Australia. Among the attendees was a 16-member delegation from Armenia with members from academia and officials of the newly formed government of Armenia. In addition, the AESA has conducted and facilitated various technical projects in Armenia and in other Armenian communities. It has organized numerous workshops and lectures on energy, environmental, transportation, information processing issues in Armenia.
Currently, the AESA organizes technical workshops, lectures and Science Olympiads among many other activities. “AESA is an important forum for the Armenian engineers and scientists to interact and learn about each other’s activities, which hopefully has a synergistic effect for all,” concluded Guevrekian.
