VIENNA, Austria—During his statement at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Conference on Nuclear Security: Commitments and Actions on December 5, Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian stated that Azerbaijan and Turkey continue to spread false accusations about Armenia as propaganda and political gain in the region.
The countries try to “exploit international fora for their own narrow political and propaganda purposes in order to spread groundless charges against Armenia,” said Nalbandian, where those “fabricated and recycled accusations have nothing to do with reality.”
Prior to this statement, the Foreign Minister indicated that Armenia works closely with the IAEA and has proven to implement international obligations during on-site inspections and assessment missions on all matters concerning nuclear energy. “Non-compliance or deviation from the requirements of international treaties has not been recorded,” read the statement.
Nalbandian said that Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant “has always registered an excellent record of safety.” He continued saying that Armenia’s government decided to extend the power plant’s operation per extensive consultations with the IAEA and international partners, emphasizing on its safety and security.
The Foreign Minister concluded by reiterating Armenia’s “full compliance with the nonproliferation treaty and other relevant treaties, as well as IAEA safeguards agreements and additional protocol.”
