Azerbaijani Crosses Border Into Armenia, Circumstance Under Investigation

YEREVAN (Armenpress)—Head of Communications and Prevention Programs of International Committee of Red Cross in Armenia (ICRC), Zara Amatuni, says the ICRC is engaged in dialogue with the Armenian authorities over the issue of the Azerbaijani citizen who passed the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on June 7.

“The Armenian authorities informed the ICRC about a person who crossed the international border into the territory of Armenia on June 7. In accordance with our mandate, we follow up on the incident and are in contact with the concerned authorities. The ICRC has a mandate to visit those captured in relation to the conflict to monitor treatment and conditions and help to ensure that they are able to maintain contact with their families. Upon request of the sides, and if the person expresses such a wish, we may act as a neutral intermediary to facilitate his or her return back home,” Amatuni said.

Citizen of Azerbaijan Valiyeva Zohra Vardzar, 1977, entered the Armenian territory from Azerbaijan on Tuesday. She is from a village located in Tovuz region of Azerbaijan. She appeared in the Armenian territory from the town of Mehrab in the region of Tavush.
