WASHINGTON—Jim Costa, United States Representative for California’s 16th Congressional District, spoke on the House floor on April 27 to honor Soghomon Tehlirian and the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire.

“I hope my colleagues would join me and the Armenians throughout the nation and around the world, in honoring Mr. Tehlirian and also pay tribute to the 1.5 million lives lost in the genocide; the first genocide of the 20th century, as well as their descendants who live today,” he relayed to the House of Representatives.

He continued by saying “We must never ever forget history, as Santayana once said ‘For those who forget history, they are doomed to repeat it.’”

“Recognizing the Armenian genocide is not something to be debated. Today and every day, I join with Armenians throughout the nation and world in honoring the 1.5 million lives lost in the genocide,” Congressman Costa said.

Costa also spoke at the community Armenian Genocide Commemoration event in Fresno, part of his district, to honor what “We are here to ensure that those lives that were sacrificed, that were lost, will never be forgotten.”
