SANTA ANA – As the final whistle blew at 7:36 p.m. at Godinez High School, the newly crowned CIF champions huddled together in excitement and rejoiced in their success. There was pandemonium in the gym as over 500 zealous supporters dressed in bright yellow Armens Pride T-shirts witnessed history.
For the first time, the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armens girls’ varsity basketball team had won the CIF-SS Division 5A championship, defeating the Faith Baptist Contenders 51-44 in a back and forth affair.
“The key to pulling through was to follow the game plan Coach Varant had devised and play hard defense, “ said point guard Aleek Terterian, who finished the game with 12 points and lasting memories.
The game was close with the Faith Baptist Contenders leading at the end of the third quarter 30-29. But the Armens went on a 19-1 run to close out the game in the fourth quarter to earn Coach Varant Vartabedian his first women’s championship title.
“When you work together, the results are amazing,” added shooting guard Alexa Kaprielian, who scored a game-high 20 points and had 5 steals. “It’s all about the team and I trust my teammates and believe in them,” added Kaprielian whose calm demeanor and clinical decision-making were instrumental in the outcome.
The Armens showed true grit, determination and discipline to ward off a strong comeback but their poise and clutch play earned them the victory they deserved.
Next for the varsity Armens is a trip to the state playoffs. They will be hosting Academia Avance on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:00pm at Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School, 5300 White Oak Ave. in Encino.
The spirits are high and glory beckons. Let the Cinderella story continue…
