YEREVAN—Unlike previous years, the 35th volume of the Haigazian Armenological Review was first launched in Yerevan, at the Central Hall of the Academy of Sciences.
On Thursday, November 5, after a ceremonial event dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Haigazian University, the launching of the 35th volume took place in the presence of the Minister of Diaspora, Hranush Hagopian; the Chair of the Academy of Sciences Armenian Studies and Humanities department, Academic Yuri Suvarian; Yerevan State University (YSU) Vice-President; AMAA Executive Secretary Zaven Khanjian; Haigazian University President Rev.-Dr. Paul Haidostian; Executive Secretary of the Haigazian Armenological Review, Dr. Antranik Dakessian; Armenia and Diaspora contributors to the Review; friends, guests, media and TV representatives.
In his opening words, Diaspora vice-minister Serj Srabionian considered the Review “a very precious yearbook and a forum for overtures between the Western and Eastern literary Armenian languages.” Srabionian noted that it is hard to overestimate the volume of the Review and emphasized that the volumes will be looked upon like those of Teotig’s Amenun Daretsuytse.
YSU Oriental Studies Department Vice-chair, Dr. Rupen Melkonian, considered the Review an Armenological oasis in the Diaspora and stressed its academic standard, appreciating the fact that it has become a brand in itself. Dr. Melkonian saw the Review as a reflection of fatherland-Diaspora scientific cooperation and underlined that the 35th volume is the Diaspora’s response to Turkish negationism.
Among the speakers were Dr. Gadvalian, head of the Academy of Sciences Hratchya Adjarian Language Institute, and Dr. Vartan Devrigian, head of the Academy of Sciences Manug Apeghian Literature Institute.
Dr. Artsvi Bakhchinian, the Review Yerevan representative, noted that notwithstanding the fact that all 950 pages of the 35th volume covered the issue of the Armenian Genocide, the volume was diverse in disciplines, topics, perspectives and views. Mihran Minassian, the Aleppo-born philologist currently residing in Armenia, gave a brief picture of the Diaspora Armenological reviews published in Armenian and noted that the Haigazian Armenological Review still maintained its role as an Armenian studies yearbook, published regularly on a yearly basis in the Diaspora and included research articles in Armenian, Arabic, French and English. Minassian detailed other particulars of the Review and wished further accomplishment of its mission.
After the conclusion of the official part of the ceremony, the event became a gathering where old and new contributors of the Review had the chance to meet each other, discuss matters related to the Review and Armenian studies in general. Each contributor left the hall carrying a thick volume of the Review. Reinvigorated, they felt further motivated to keep up the scholarly work and their endeavor in Armenian studies.
The event was a showcase for the increasing number of Review contributors from Armenia, a reflection of the growing Armenological web around the Review and further evidence of its success.
Launching in Tbilisi and Djavakhk
On Sunday, November 8 at 2:00pm, for the first time ever, a volume of the Haigazian Armenological Review was launched in Tbilisi, at “Hayardun,” next to the Prelacy of the Armenian Orthodox Church. Approximately 40 scholars, arts and literature enthusiasts, and members and representatives of the Tbilisi Armenian community gathered in the hall. The Executive Secretary of the Review, Dr. Dakessian, briefed the audience on Haigazian University, its history and role and highlighted the mission of the Haigazian Armenological Review. Noting that it was the long-standing intention of the editorial board of the Review to have contributors from Tbilisi and have the Tbilisi Armenians reflected in the Review, he called on the audience to contribute to the Review.
The audience raised questions about details and procedural matters related to submission of articles. They also had questions about Haigazian University and the Middle East Armenian communities, in particular their difficulties, the Armenian milieu and organizations, and the conditions of the Lebanese and Syrian Armenian communities.
A similar launching ceremony took place in Djavakhk on Monday, 9 November at 2:00pm in the “Akhalkalak Youth Center,” in the presence of the Center’s activists, school teachers, scholars, media representatives and arts and literture enthusiasts of different generations.
Dr. Dakessian spoke about Haigazian University, highlighted some aspects of its mission and underlined the objectives of the Haigazian Armenological Review. Again, noting, he noted that it was the long-standing intention of the editorial board of the Review to have contributors from Djavakhk and have the Djavakhk Armenians reflected in the Review, he called the audience to contribute to the Review.
The audience raised questions concerning the destiny of the Armenians of Syria and Iraq and looked for ways to promote further cooperation between the Review and the community’s scholars.
The event concluded with a reception where conversation and discussion continued.
The launching of the 35th volume of the Haigazian Armenological Review in Tbilis and Djavakhk was made possible by the consistent efforts of Yerevan Armenian Research Center ANI in collaboration with the Djavakh Youth Center.
