GLENDALE—The liberation of Shushi 25 years ago was celebrated not only by Armenians around the globe but also by all who value the ideals of liberty and democracy. This momentous event was the turning point that led to Armenian victory in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) War and the creation of a free and independent Republic of Artsakh.

The Los Angeles Shushi Friendship Association will commemorate the anniversary and showcase 25 years of Artsakh’s freedom, prosperity and growth at Discover Shushi 2017, a public event on April 30 from 5-9pm at Phoenicia Restaurant in Glendale.

“Shushi is an essential part of the Armenian soul because of its ancient history, and our event will honor that important role,” said Alec Baghdasaryan, board member of the Los Angeles Shushi Friendship Association. “We’ll also enjoy celebrating Artsakh’s tremendous progress and Shushi’s revival as a cultural center.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample many of Artsakh’s traditional delicacies, including Gingalov hats (vegetarian herb stuffed beureg), distinctive wines and spirits from the region, and delicious local jams, preserves and honey. Renowned experts will offer fascinating presentations on Artsakh’s tourism offerings, including historical and archeological treasures, ecotourism and nature, and outdoor activities and extreme sports. There will be presentations reflecting Shushi’s rich tradition of poetry, music and art, and traditional rugs and textiles will be displayed and their ancient messages deciphered.

In addition, a number of diasporan organizations that have made significant contributions to Shushi will be on hand to discuss their past accomplishments, as well as plans for the future of the region.

The Los Angeles Shushi Friendship Association was formed to support Shushi’s continuing freedom, prosperity and growth. Discover Shushi 2017 will raise much needed funds to support music schools in Shushi and to provide scholarships for university students from Shushi. The Association is an outgrowth of the Friendship City relationship between Los Angeles and Shushi that was initiated by Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian in 2012.

Tickets to Discover Shushi 2017 are available for a donation of $20 per person ($10 for students). Children under 12 are admitted for free. Tax deductible sponsorship opportunities to support Shushi, with appropriate recognition at the event, are also available.
